Homestay

Posted on by

RFIE is committed to place students only with approved homestay providers to ensure our international students have a safe and comfortable place to live and learn.
Our homestay families accommodate long-term students  (several months/years)  and short term students (several weeks e.g in the summer camp program).

What is a Homestay?

Homestay programs offer International students to live with local families in their host countries. Homestay programs range from basic room-rental (roomstay) arrangements to complete family immersion. In a homestay program, you will typically have your own room. You will join the family for meals and take part in their normal daily routine. Usually host families tend to be families that have younger or teenage children themselves. Host families often choose to offer homestays because it’s a great way for their own children to meet with international students and be exposed to different cultures.

Why Homestay?

Friends

Homestay programs are a great way to make new friends. Homestay families usually  have children themselves, often around the same age group as the students they are hosting. They also provide a good support system for international students who are far from home. As a result friendships are often formed between hosts and students that last a lifetime.

Language

If you live in a dormitory or a youth hostel, you usually spend your free time with people who speak your mother tongue. But in a homestay program, you will be required to converse in the native language of your host country, allowing you to improve your language skills.  Your host family will most likely be excited to help you practice your skills. Having good English skills will make living and studying in Canada far easier.

Culture

Homestay programs provide students with a authentic cultural experience. Living with a local family will really submerse you into the Canadian culture and life. Usually you will spend free time and evenings with your host family. You will experience local cuisine, as well as local events and places. Additionally host families can serve as tour guide and give you tips on how to get by in your new environment.

Price

Homestays are an affordable option. Homestays are often the cheapest accommodation option because the cost of room and board generally includes meals, WiFi, laundry facilities, and even occasionally some light cleaning services. Homestays often even offer transportation to and from schools, voluntary activities, etc.
